content (percentage of protein in the dry matter) ranges from 34-80% (e.g. Whey Protein Concentrate WPC60 has 60% protein
in the dry matter or Milk Protein Concentrate MPC60has 60% protein in the dry matter).

High-protein products such as Whey Protein Isolate WPI90 (90% protein in the dry matter) may first undergo a microfiltration
(MF) treatment step to lower the fat content. our (UF) is then applied to the MF defatted whey protein permeate to
standardize and increase the protein content in the total solids.

To maximize the solid content, it is common to use diafiltration (dilution with water) in later stages to wash more small non-protein
components (i.e. lactose and ash) into the UF permeate. It is also common to increase the feed spacer size of the element to
maximize the solid content during the later stages of the UF system. Additionally, a tighter UF membrane is commonly used for the
concentration of products with 80% protein (or more) in the dry matter.

Our Plant is a 10,000 Daltons (Da) molecular weight cut-off polyethersulfone (PES) UF membrane developed for use in food
& dairy applications. This membrane is commonly used for whey protein and milk protein concentration applications. Combined
with our sanitary outer shell, these membranes are ideal for milk and whey protein concentration.

01. Ultra filtration

An ultra filtration membrane is a membrane that effects separation on the principle of sieving. The membrane has pores that are in the nanometer size range, and will therefore prevent particles, colloids, microorganisms and dissolved solids that are larger in dimension than the pores in the membrane surface from passing. The membrane therefore acts as a physical, size-exclusion barrier, and it is for that reason that ultra filtration membranes produce such a high quality product.

Ultra filtration membranes are produced in either flat-sheet or tubular-type geometries. The membranes that were used in this study are referred to as capillary membranes. The membranes are narrow-bore tubes that have an outside diameter of 1.8 mm and a lumen (bore) diameter of 1.2 mm. The membranes are internally skinned, which means that the pre-treated feed water enters into the lumen from where it filters outwards under a pressure driving force. The trans-membrane pressure required to produce clean-filtered water is typically less than 2 kg/cm², typically 1.2 kg/cm²

 

• Produces a MF/UF quality effluent suitable for reuse applications or as a high quality feed water source for Reverse Osmosis treatment. Indicative output quality of MF/UF systems include SS < 1 mg/L, turbidity < 5 NTU and up to 4 log removal of virus (depending on the membrane nominal pore size). In addition, MF/UF provides a barrier to certain chlorine resistant pathogens such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia.

 

• The resultant small footprint can be a feature used to address issues of visual amenity, noise and odour.

Working Principal

Ultra filtration is a unique pressure-driven physical separation process in which the water is passed through porous (partially permeable) membranes with pore sizes in the range of 0.1 to 0.01 micron.These membranes are in the form of long hollow fibers.
